Wendy Friar, R.N., M.S.

Wendy W. Friar, is Director; Community Health Education at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. Ms. Friar is responsible for the ongoing management, development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the hospital's community health and wellness education programs, that encounters almost 100,000 members of the community annually.

Outreach services include community health, minority health, exercise and wellness, perinatal education, doula services, and senior wellness. Ms. Friar created, developed and implemented Senior Fit, a multi-component exercise program for seniors at 17 locations that received a citation of excellence from the Governor of Maryland and was recognized in 2003 by the National Council On The Aging as one of ten programs of excellence for older adults and one of three programs for an impact study on the effectiveness of senior exercise. Other innovative programs created by Ms. Friar include the Holy Cross Senior Source, an award winning public/private partnership providing seniors with an opportunity to learn traditional and nontraditional health education and wellness; the Mammogram Assistance Program, funded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for medically underserved; and the Ethnic Health Promoters program, serving racial and ethnic minorities in the Holy Cross Service area.

Ms. Friar was appointed to the Montgomery County Commission on Health in 2005 and chairs the Health Disparities Committee. She is a member of Proyecto Salud (a community clinic in Montgomery County, Maryland) Board of Directors (2004-2005 and 2007 to present).

Ms. Friar graduated in 1974 with an A.A.S. in Nursing from Queensborough Community College, Queens, New York. In 1976, she received her B.S. in Nursing from Texas Woman's University, Denton, Texas (cum laude); in 1990 she received a M.S. in Maternal Child Care and Nursing Administration (dual track) from University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Nursing; and in 1991 she received a Certificate of Health Care Administration from University of Maryland, University College, College Park. Friar will be attending the doctoral program at the Catholic University of America in fall, 2007.
